I just downloaded an app called easyTether, I don't have the VZW tethering plan but the app still allows me to USB tether for free. My question is, since I don't have a tethering plan, will VZW notice that I'm tethering and charge me for it? I have unlimited 4G for my phone if this makes any difference.

If all of a sudden your data spikes and its draws attention to your account they can look at it and see that you were tethering, they can see how much was from the phone itself, and how much from tether. I tether one in a while and ive never had issues. If you plan on using it as your primary means of internet i would pay for the tethering plan. If you are just gonna use it here and there then you should be fine.

I agree with everything but the bolded part. They cannot tell the difference between the phone and tethered devices. The phone is basically a port forward device in tethering situations; they only see the IP address associated with the phone and that is it.
If they do notice your biggest fear shouldn't be if they will charge you. By tethering you are breaking the contract you signed they could choose to terminate the contract and you would then have a phone that doesn't work. Not saying that would happen but it could. If you want to tether you should just purchase the appropriate plan.
