Tethering?

As I consider my switch to a Android phone from a BB, one thing that concerns me is it seems that the tethering is not possible with Android? Is that true?

One of the most useful things I do with my BB is plug it in via USB to my laptop and use it to download some emails before a flight so I can work on my laptop. Is this possible with Android phones?

Yes totally possible. But not right of the box. I believe you need a rooted phone to be able to use it. Only reason not sure right out of the box is I rooted my phone on day1 of having the phone and I tether via bluetooth but with tmob lacking on 3g there is mostly edge network around the US but 3g is now starting to pop up everywhere.

Yea I'm on TMo in the US as well and speed does suck, but even on Edge the tethering usually lets me download a few emails before a flight.

So as a total newbie what does "rooting" the phone mean, I'm guessing it gives you full root access to the OS - but want to confirm. Also how hard is it to do?
