Text fowarding to Google Voice

Ok, my dad was planning on getting an Android phone soon. I told him that he could go ahead and cancel our texting plan because he'd be able to text from Google Voice. But he was asking what about the people who already text him at his regular number. So I was wondering can you get Google Voice to redirect texts to your regular number to your Google Voice number so it would be free. Is that possible? Or would he have to give out his Google Voice number to everyone?

No, Google Voice has no way to intercept it. You could tell Verizon to put a block on SMS so you don't run up a bill... but be aware that G Voice doesn't send or receive MMS

I recommend using only your GV number in general. Though not everyone wants to or can for various reasons.

This way I don't get the "free minutes" when someone else with a verizon phone calls me

If they're on your F&F list they're still free. Not sure about any possible other "free minutes".
