Is there an option to make the screen wake-up when I receive a text message? Right now it just plays a sound and the screen stays off?

Are you just looking for a more noticeable indicator? If so, google "android flash notification." There are a number of apps that will make the camera LED flash as a message notifier.

I was looking for an option for the screen to light up briefly when I receive a text message. I hate to say the bad word, but kinda like what iphones do when you receive a text

you can try a 3rd party messaging app. i use Evolve Sms. it has an option to wake screen on new texts.
