Help text messaging

Hopefully an easy question to answer. How many characters per text message on the Galaxy Apollo? Can I make them longer as I am using my 'free' text so fast I run out before the month is up. This has never happened on previous mobiles.

'free text msgs' from operators count 150 characters. If you exceed that, it will count as multiple texts, it doesnt matter if the galaxy apollo supports more characters in a single text than that.

The only thing I found is that on this phone if you make the text message to long it automatically changes into a MMS message after approx 450 characters.
So if you have free texts available but send a MMS message does it then cost, don't know the answer myself so never go over the 450 characters instead split it into different text messages.
