Help Text to Email issue

My fiance is currently deployed off the coast of Japan. the only way we can communicate is through text/email. I used to have a service through Verizon and we never had a problem with him sending me texts through his email address. Now i have t-mobile and when he tries to send me a text through his email address it wont work, it shows up as a 6KB MMS and when i try to download the message it always says that the download has failed. Every once in a while he will send a message and it will show up, but mine also send as a mms, even though its just text. And i'll also add that none of the messages are more than 160 characters. I've tried downloading other texting apps and none of them seem to work, I could always go through my email but it's much less convenient than using texts. someone please help!
