I love my Droid Optimus M, not just because it was given to me practically new and FREE, but it's great at those moments when I'm really bored and need to occupy and or kill time. The only problem is that it still has stuff on it that I don't use and feel is taking up space. This is why I joined a few forums and stopped at this one. I think the 3 email apps are a waste, so are some other apps that I cannot uninstall. Thus the overwhelming need to root, but I read this cannot be done on the Optimus M, so I researched how to brick, but now I'm SCARED to. I have read so many threads and so many ways to do both, I don't know what thread to follow and what to do first (I assume bricking would be first). I just want to do this correctly because having someone else's crap on MY phone is driving me bizerk.

Rooting is what you ware looking for. Bricking is something you definitely don't want. The expression "bricking your phone" refers to making it as useful as a brick (just sits there and does nothing) after making a firmware change. Usually a "bricked" phone is a fatal condition. That is very hard to do with most Android phones and what you are reading in the forum are either people who think they bricked their devices or are in a semi-bricked state. This refers to a phone that will not boot into Android by either hanging on the recovery screen or be stuck in a boot loop.

Rooting is fairly straightforward.

Let me offer a word of caution. Many apps provide services for other parts of the OS and if you remove them, you can disable certain features or make your phone unusable. More importantly, system apps are not easily restorable like simply installing an .apk file. And once deleted, even a factory reset will not recover them. You will have to locate and flash a stock rom image to get them back. If you plan on rooting and deleting those apps, please check back here first before you do anything so we can make sure it's safe for you to delete those without any negative impact to your phone.
