The Black and White Challenge

How does color affect your phone usage? Want to find out? Set your phone to Monochromacy. You have to enable Developer options then (On an HTC 10) scroll down to Advanced, then under Hardware accelerated rendering tap on Simulate color space and choose Monochromacy. You can easily get back to full color mode by turning off Developer options.

Interesting.

My homescreens are already monochromatic/gray scale and have been for a looooong lotta time, I just like it better. I'm pretty sure it doesn't stop me from opening stuff though. I'm not going to flip it on phone-wide though, I only check Instagram a few times a day and don't follow enough peeps to go down any rabbit holes. I don't game either so that won't matter. Twitter, Feedly and forums are my big draws and they have little color so it doesn't matter there either.

I can see where it might make a difference at first, but maybe not long-haul, you'd get used to it. Pictures and games would be annoying but everything else would be easy to adjust to.

I prefer black and white for reading and texting, my eyes are getting bad and the black/white monochromatic setting makes all the difference, especially in bright daylight outdoor situations. I actually which there was a way I could configure it so that there was a quick shortcut to switch back and forth from color to black/white.

You can create a shortcut to the developers settings with an app like:

or

Yes, I wonder what benefits might be sought with this setting other than mentioned readability.

Op asked about usage. I'm curious the kind of usage you're talking about? Battery usage? Data usage? Maybe (if the grayscale makes you less interested) phone usage?

(Sorry, I'm confused as usual)

Overall Phone usage. I ended up going back to color after 1 full day. Watching videos, playing games, and even replying to forums just wasn't the same in black and white. I did notice less battery usage but when your just answering calls,, listening to music and making the occasional; post how much battery would you use anyway? After making the change I still had 77% of battery left after a full day. That's unheard of for me. I'm usually down to 30%.
