I recently came into some money and a meager income. Living on the edge for years, I couldn't wait to upgrade everything in my life...
I bought then returned several new PCs, none of which that seemed demonstrably better than my current ten year-old Win XP>7hp PC, having had countless rebuilds and extra partitions and distros. Most recently, I tried to embrace Win10. After all that, I'm back to Win7 with Linux Mint being ignored on a flash drive.
I popped to reconnect standard cable TV, realized that its 'improvements' just added complexity and cost a lot more, so I returned it and reconnected my HDTV – not much to watch but costs nothing. Over time, it has sunk in that I really don't need or even want all these improvements. I've also crated my laptop, my tablet and my router – a wacky Christmas for some kid across town.
During all that, I also bought but then unbought two places to live; one in another city and another just across town. In both cases, they seemed perfect at first but gradually ate at me as their closings approached – I realized that I like where I currently live better, ratty as it is.
So now I'm throwing money at my thirty year-old singlewide; new pipes underneath, new roof on top, new paint in and out. Then, if I still have the itch, I'll get new floors and appliances. I feel better about shelling out for that than all the other stuff mentioned above.
I've spent a lot learning that I don't have to spend a lot, but something else will come long too...
