The Most Over-Hyped Features

Generally I agree that most people will not be making use of these features as they are introduced, however, the same things were originally said about having a camera in your phone, data enabled phones, GPS, etc. Eventually most of them will become standard features that, if absent, will relegate the device to second tier selections.

4G - The faster, the better in my opinion...

Video Calling - Not for me, thanks.

Dual Core - Yes please, 480p flash video runs at maybe ~20fps on my Desire and after a while, drops further.

HD Recording - I haven't taken a video on my Desire yet, and I got it in June...

NFC - Seems really cool, can't wait until it's mainstream.

I agree that many, if not all, of these features will become mainstream. But I think the author is right for most users - buying decisions in the next 6 months shouldn't be significantly affected by the presence or lack of these features.

Stopped reading when he said I couldn't reliably watch HQ youtube vids on 4g..

I do it everyday, thanks.

ugh.. kept reading... wish I didn't... Make sure you buy your phone based on if its stock messaging app can thread or not.. its not like you have an android.....

4G - I'm very satisfied with 3G. HOWEVER, I will not turn down a faster speed once it becomes the price of 3G.

Video Calling - I've used Facetime like twice.

Dual Core - I'm more than happy with a single core phone. Not saying it should never get there, but I don't think it's needed right now.

HD Recording - Not big for me, but I know tons of people who are into HD video on their phones.

NFC - Not over-hyped at all. This is one of my favorite features out of anything on a cell phone. I NEED NFC!!!

What exactly do they mean by NFC? If it's sending a photo, song or video from one phone to another via Bluetooth. It's not overhyped at all, I find this feature very useful.

However the article is talking about using NFC for making payments. This is overhyped. We keep on reading and hearing about this, but nothing has happened yet, well apart from Japan.

As for video calling. My phone has this capability, but my carrier China Mobile does not.

HD video recording, I do find this useful.

4G? I don't live in the USA.

Bleh.

I think that the writer has a few hit and miss points.

It doesn't hurt to buy based on what you need and want to do now.

Instead of what the company is trying to sell you.

NFC is so bad, Christian religions are even referring to to the mark of the beast. It's a personal identifier.

Tie that NFC ID with this ID:

Obama Eyeing Internet ID for Americans - Tech Talk - CBS News

And we are all just a branded number. All of our moves, purchases, gps co-ordinates, all kept in a big database. Any inch of privacy, anonymity on the internet, all gone in an instant.

So those of you hailing NFC like it's the second coming (read: cashless society = no freedom, at all. I WILL kill people if I have to. ), maybe you should stop and think twice about what your asking for.

To me the over hyped things I hear about concerning cellphones(features & non-features)

4g is overhyped....until it is more mainstream, i wouldnt worry about it. I could care less myself b/c i always am on wi-fi...I usually on use the network when im looking for like a restaurant or bank or store while driving(which is why At&t's data cap will probably never truly hurt me b/c i use wi-fi)

bringing me to point two...Data caps

3)Customization--We get it, I can make my fine look the way I WANT vs an iphone which is basically what steve blow job(not my words, something i saw someone call him) wants it to look like....Still, i could careless and a lot of ppl could careless about it

4)No-Super Amoled or Super LCD--Provided the screen is not like 380X450, as long as it is decent, idc...Ppl have been seriously spoiled by phones like the Droid INC and Galaxy S

5)No FFC?--I hear this all the time/read this all the time. Until Android gets a stable videochat function like facetime(only on network and wifi), videochat still has a ways to go to me.

Way to blow it out of proportion? You can have NFC with out an American internet ID.

Yeah right.

Do you know the original "intended" use for a social security number?

Now it's "blown out of proportion"

It's your tag to your whole life, when it's original "intention" was just passing out SSI benefits.

Yes, but your SSN was issued by the government, for the government. I don't see how swiping your phone to get a Fanta is now some magic ID person tracker.

Are you really that nieve?

You don't think the gov has all your credit info attached to a file in a giant database already? This NFC just makes it easier.

Most overhyped has to be FFC and video chat...totally worthless features driving up the price of my next phone. Sure some people might love video chat, but none for me, thanks.

DUAL CORE!!!!

It IS needed right now. Not only for performance, but more importantly for battery life. Google it man. You will see tons of sources stating that phones get a dramatic improvement in battery life with dual core cpus.

It should be if the user only upgrades their phone every 2 years or so. Getting the latest and greatest insures that when these do become mainstream, you aren't left out.

If you upgrade every year then these shouldn't necessarily be a deal breaker just yet.

A fist? Ah, you mean naive, an easy mistake for the crazy, I assume ;)

I do know that the government has all my info, so using NFC on my phone in the way I do a credit card is no problem for me. I have nothing to hide, thus nothing to fear.

Fear the transition to a cashless society.

Cashless society means any hope we have at our sovereignty is completely gone. But you go ahead and keep thinking everything is ok. That's what they want you to do.

You've never heard of the Bildenburg Group?

Oh and way to jump on my spelling error. Sorry I can't be 100% accurate on my EVO but if it makes you feel better about yourself to correct someone's typo on an internet forum by all means...

Anything else, Mike?

I'm pretty sure they just want to swipe data between others and objects.

I swear, there's some REAL nut jobs on these forums.

I agree with that article on a few points at least, but calling some of them overhyped is just dumb.

4G - Since when is a faster data connection not desirable? Did this guy call 3G "overhyped" when it started rolling out?

Video Calls - Yeah useless to me, I have no interest in it. That said, I know it'll be huge if for no other reason than to make phone sex more than just words...

Dual-Core - Wait, 2.2 can't make full use of all it's advantages right now and that makes it overhyped?

HD - I completely agree with him on the megapixel wars. I think HD video is still good because that resolution isn't really all that high anyway, but a superhigh megapixel count on a phone is just stupid. Not only is that many pixels crammed into that tiny of a space a recipe for lowering quality, but beyond a relatively low number it's the lens that's the limiting factor.

NFC - I doubt this will really take off. Credit card fobs that you can wave at readers have been around for years and I have yet to even see someone use one in person. People just aren't that interested in that small of a convenience improvement, plus I suspect many people are not going to want to turn losing a cell phone into an even bigger financial risk than it already is. Lose one now and you have to buy a new phone and you might get dinged for a few calls to Indonesia or something. Lose one that is linked to a bank account and you could lose considerably more.

As far as the fears that the gov't is tracking you: You're not that interesting. Also, the best security for possible would be for it to be true that they kept all records on all people in some huge database. When you're a single grain of sand on a beach that big, you're not in any real danger of being singled out. Personally I think the biggest lies spread by the gov't are the ones they leak through sources that get picked up and repeated by places like infowars. It's so much easier to go about your business of getting kickbacks from lobbyists and special interest groups when you've got the most passionate people busy tilting at windmills like chemtrails and one-world-government conspiracies...
