the "N" means what, on the dialpad?

My generic, stock dialpad has some undocumented keys. What does the "N" button mean? It literally inserts an N into the phone number of the contact.

I know the P (which inserts a comma) results in a 2 second pause, and the W (which inserts a semi-colon) results in a prompt waiting for your "OK" to send the rest of the digits. I would like to know what the "N" does. I read somewhere that it stands for "number", but what exactly does that do?

My dialpad has all letters A thru Z, "N" will help enter Nancy as a contact. Never saw a dialpad with just an N and P and W (and never knew they did anything other than spell words.

From settings of old dial-up modems I know it "N" stands for "Negotiation for Carrier Speed" (means modem's speed).
There are N0 to N5 ;)

EDIT: In this forum there is a thread about a dial-up modem for to connect to an Android smartphone. It can use a phone land line (e.g. hotel without internet) without the need of mobile network's data to join the internet.

Note: Dial-up modems use P and W too, like N :)
They are part of AT Command Set

P on the dial pad means pause,
W means wait.

It helps when you are dialling a series of numbers where pauses and waits are required. For example, on mobile banking, you dial a number first then enter your account number. Some people are just lazy that they can set up the dial to dial the bank, wait for answer then automatically dial their number. :)
