thinking about going to metro PCs...a few questions though

So I have been with ATT for 6 years...I need unlimited data due to.traveling and GPS...I went into the store today have they have some great deals on phones for NEW customers.... I currently have a ATT lg g2 which should work for metro PCs....my question is by being a new customer can't I just get a new metro pcs phone with the huge discount at the store and then just swap back to my lg g2 ???? I need a backup phone anyways but I would love just to pay for the new customer price....

Right but shouldn't I just take the massive discount on the new customer instant rebates for metro PCs ? Its like paying 30 bucks for a phone instead of 300 ..I should do it just to get the discount

First unlock your phone with ATT, then you'll have an unlocked LGG2 (With or without MPCS).
If you want to keep #... while your ATT acct is still active, port # to MPCS on New MPCS phone.
Otherwise, just get MPCS acct going with new phone and new # and swap SIM into Unlocked LGG2.

The hydro life is going for 30 and the one touch fierce 2 are going for 30 with new activation...i know both would be slow compared to the g2 but 30 bucks for quad core phones is a steal...especially because i can root and install vanilla android on both

Hmm, why not just buy a metro PCS sim card and choose their unlimited data plan? No need to buy a phone you may not need. Even Metro advertises about bringing AT&T customers over to their service plans.

Well it would be a great backup for me or my wife...she has a low end nokia lumia i was just thinking about giving it to her since we are both going to go with metro

Oh, okay. If your wife doesn't mind the smaller size(4inch screen), the Galaxy Light can be had for 50 bucks in store.

Ya funny story..rooted and installed a custom rom on my g2 when it first came out....the ROM had too many bugs so I went back to stock... Fast forward a year later I take OTA, brick my phone RIGHT after our wedding and my phone had about 200 WEDDING pics that I hadn't backed up yet.....had to use a dummy phone while I got a replacement which took 2 weeks....I always need a back up phone while I'm installing Roms lol
