Root Time to go CUSTOM!

I've had my N5 for just over a week now and I effin' love it! I'm new to android so I've had some fun already playing around with some root apps and tweaks and stuff but now I think it's time to jump into the deep and and play with a custom rom!

Dirty Unicorns looks interesting and Cataclysm has been suggested to me so I think I'll go with one of them. The problem is I pretty much have zero idea what I'm doing so the purpose of this thread is for you, my bros and hoes at android forums, to lay out for me in the most lay or layman's terms what I need to do to flash a sweet custom rom onto my nexus 5.

I'm a Mac user, if that matters.

Cheers in advanced, bros :) I'm looking forward to the ride :)

First you have to decide what it is about the phone you don't like or are missing, and will get from the ROM you choose. Just flashing a custom ROM to be able to say you've flashed a custom ROM is silly.

Then find the ROM that gives you what it is that you're looking for. Read reviews on it. (Some ROMs may sound nice but have problems - like no GPS, or the phone quality is terrible, or 3G but no 4G, etc.)

Then once you've decided on the ROM, read the dev's writeup on it to find out how to install it. There's no one way to install ROMs, there isn't even one way to install ROMs on a single phone, there's a way to install a particular ROM, and you'll have to read the writeup on that ROM to find out how it was designed to be installed.

BTW, a LOT of what newbies want to accomplish by changing ROMS can be accomplished better by changing apps, like a new launcher.

You can also check out xposed framework and the modules that are developed for it like gravitybox, which allows you to customize the status bar, navigation bar and more. There's a ton of other modules you can download for xposed framework too.

Thanks for the replies :)

I have xposed framework and gravity box installed and I've got some cool tweaks from them, just looking to maybe push it a bit further, you know? I've come from apple so I kind of feel like I want to do the whole android thing to the max.

Yeah I hear ya man.... Seems like I'm always Flashing this or that and I have 6 phone's and 2 tablets to mess around with, my wife gets annoyed with me sometimes lol. Anyway if you haven't before you flash a ROM make sure you perform a nandroid backup and unlock the bootloader.

Have you checked out MultiRom for nexus 5? You can boot between multiple Roms.... From stock, cataclysm, DU, cm11 and Ubuntu or even more if you want.
