Tips for ensuring good performance???

Hi Guys 'n Gals..

I've a Nexus One (Stock, 2.1-update1) and was getting increasingly slow APP performance as well as APP crashes from time2time, and the 'phone was getting hotter than I was used to, again intermittently.

It then occurred to me (D'oh!, only been in IT 35+ years...) that maybe I should clear out a few APPs I didn't use/need and, having done that, yup, performance got better & smoother...

Question: Anyone seen an idiot's guide to ensuring Android keeps running sweet?? There doesn't seem to be anything in my Nexus One User guide, and only a few related postings such as ...

-
and whilst there's loads of Tips for developers to get good performance, not much for us 'umble mere users...

http://androidforums.com/android-lounge/3208-how-free-up-memory-your-phone.html

Any guides, tips, hints?? Have I missed a simple guide
- or does it all come down to "Do a hard-reset & clear out cr*p & think about ROOTin'"????. (Personally I'm trying to stay stock rather than Root, prefering a quiet life..)

& am I correct to assume this is a generic Android user question (albeit there may be some 'phone specific & Android-Release-specific tips)??? Weird, even searching Google's Nexus One Help forum with "Tuning" got not much of any use...

Cheers & thanks in advance for any advice

maintain 30% free space on your phones internal memory.

Clear out cache from time to time.
Lot of apps including browser stores cache memory.

Goto settings - applications .

Thats all i can come up with at this time.

Install advanced task manager free. It made mine run so much faster after 2.1 I have 154 apps installed and still runs fast now. Was slow before hand.

You dog. Snappy little processor, twice the memory of most, & still there's lag? I can't believe my eyes! Joking, joking, ... Stuff happens.

Uninstalling apps you don't use makes sense. I hadn't heard the 30% free internal space recommendation before, but why not.

Apps and widgets you do use seem more likely to me to be the cause of what you're experiencing, though. And for me, high CPU utilization is more likely to be the cause of slow response than available memory. I use 2 apps to better see what's going on: CPU Utilization Plus & Memory Utilization Plus. They're paid, but there's a free version of each.

There are different opinions about the need for task killers. Some find them useful & others don't see a need for them. I generally have a lot going on, & with what I see using the Mem Util app, Android memory management works very well on its own.

To each his own though, & if you'd like to one out for a spin, I think this is a well-reasoned article.

To clear cache, once in Manage Application, I do Menu > Filter & select All & Menu > Sort & select Size. By default, only downloaded apps are displayed & some native apps, like browser mentioned above, can have a fair amount of cached data. For me, most of larger apps are larger because of cached data, so sorting by size groups them together.

Thanks guys, appreciate the thoughts and your time....

Odd tho that there appears not be be guidance from Mssrs Google re. general "How to make Android run sweet"...

Ho hum,

You could always root your phone and toss a custom 2.1 build on it. I hum along with ~220mb of free memory now /w my processor going at 1.1ghz. Its pretty quick.

My wife has an N1 just like me and I will compare them to see if I can observe differences and I do. Big time.

Like I said, I average 220mb free memory most of the time. She sits around 90mb.
She is stock at 1.0ghz still, Im at 1.1ghz.

Google Earth showed the biggest difference. Both phones zoomed out max and I hit the locate button at the same time. I was zoomed and loaded about 10 seconds faster than hers. If anyone wants a youtube of it I can.
