Tips to save battery life?

My phone barely makes it 8 hours before it shuts down, thats very poor battery life since im coming from Blackberry that could go for entire day without a problem. Also is this common thing for OS?

oh Ive read that before, but I cant believe that my battery lasts for 8 hours, thats horrible

and when I checked stats it says that Android OS spends 50% of my battery
