TMobile update nightmare...how to prevent

I agree. I have turned OFF updates period.

I have a 3 year old Galaxy S that has never had a major update on it. That phone never did anything strange or experienced the horrors of unknown happenings.

IF a particular app begs for an update, I review my use of that app. If it is a severe security risk, then I allow the update. IF the update is a minor feature, I forgo the potential risk of problems on my phone.

View it like this. You buy a desktop PC that works perfectly the day it left the factory. Never gives you any hiccups. Then all of a sudden along comes an update for the video card. You apply that update to your system which has been flawless for two years now, and all of a sudden, the system craps out and locks up.

That is NOT a piece of fiction. I have been a computer/electronics tech all my working life. The BIOS on a computer should rarely be fooled with unless you know exactly what you are doing.

The desktop I am using now is a perfect example of what I just said. I did an "uh oh" one day and applied a video card update because the fonts were not as sharp as I wanted them to be. That update caused me a lot of grief searching for the original factory release of the video drivers which I finally found and reinstalled. I had to use Windows Safe Mode to apply that driver as the normal video was crapped out.

Updates with Android apps happen too frequently and for the most frivolous of reasons. A minor tweak to a screen here, a tweak to the background process there. Then your phone starts doing funny things. Not for me anymore. Once I get it working, I leave it alone.

Then I back it up with Kies 3.0 so that I can restore it to where it is now. Things happen ya know, even if we don't want them too.

How do you shut off any/all future updates on ATT phone? I looked around and found:
- Settings>About Device>Software Update....no way to disable
- Settings>Security Policy Updates.....unchecked automatic updates

thanks

Settings/ magnify glass (search feature)

type in the word 'up'

That will give you a short cut to all features with 'up' in the wording.
That is the way I found it on my phone, and I made sure 'Automatic Updates' is NOT checked.

In fact, just a couple minutes ago, Go SMS Pro popped up a screen asking me if I wanted to accept a new update. I took my time and read what it was about.
new fonts, delivery schedule on messaging, etc... 4 or 5 items had been fixed (or made better).

I decided to let it update.

I choose updates on a one at a time basis. If it is not pertinent to me, I skip it.
