To get upgrade do I have to surrender current phone?

I'm now eligible for upgrading my first smartphone ever, the OG Droid. I don't really want to part with my old handset though. Is that automatically part of an upgrade deal or is it possible to upgrade and keep it? I'm not sure how this works...

You can keep it. If you want to give it back, they give you something like $25. You can probably sell parts for more than that. You can also keep the OG and continue to use it on wifi if you want.
