To Overseas G1 Users: What VOIP Program do u use?

I work in Vietnam and I am looking for a VOIP program that is REALLY a VOIP program. Seems that most of these programs are just a scam... Skype will not work from here. Iskoot will dial a US Number to connect to Syype so I can pay Skype to connect my call ! What a Joke. So far it looks like I will have to wait for Google Voice to start working but again they might do the same.
True VOIP is this:
WHEN YOU ARE CONNECTED BY WIFI OVER THE INTERNET TO THE USA THEN YOU SHOULD ONLY PAY 1 OR 2 CENTS A MINUTE TO MAKE A CALL TO THE USA.

The VOIP programs out here today want up to 23 cents a minute. Its a JOKE !

So what are you using ???

At least I have my MagicJack which works but I must use at an Internet Cafe. Its $29 usd a year for unlimited calling to the USA from ANYWHERE in the world!
Why can't I do this on my G1 ?

Wait....what?

Dude..there's soooo many things wrong with your argument here....

First of all, you don't need Wi-Fi to do VoIP....you just need an internet connection of some sort...
If you were talking about VoIP on the G1...then still...I'm sure VoIP would work over 3G connections..(it just probably wouldn't be fast enough to keep up)...

Second of all...VoIP can cost as much as the provider wants to sell it at...
Unless there's a law that says it NEEDS to be 1 or 2 cents (which there seems to be for everything in your eyes)...which I know isn't true...

And where does it ask for 23 cents a minute to call the US?

I'm not even from the US and I know I can call US numbers for like...a cent a minute...
A large number of VoIP companies are based in the US anyway so of course they are going to have cheap calls to US...both mobile and landline...
I don't know what VoIP service you use but if they are charging you that much to call the states...I suggest you change...


To me it sounds like you barely use your G1 because it doesn't do anything beneficial for you....

And the reason why you can't do this on your G1?
Go ask Google....
But I'd hazard a guess that it has something to do with the fact that you have a phone to make calls with and using VoIP would bypass the need to use their network services...hence they wouldn't be able to make money...because nobody will be using their services....

And your MagicJack....do you realise that you are PAYING to get that "UNLIMITED" calling...?

Remember...everything has a price....
You can't expect to get things and not give something in return...
 
Why do you make such a long post and not give me an answer?

Again what are other oversea G1 users doing to make cheap calls to the USA. Using Wifi We do not have to pay local service AND Voice quality will be better over Wifi as anyone offering Wifi is using a ASDL connection. Plus it free.
 
I think the answer is in that post...but if you want me to make it clearer for you....

Unfortunately...there are no apps that comply with your outlandish "needs"....

I hope there is someone else who has a more positive answer. I dowloaded a program called sipdroid but it needs cupcake to work. Google voice might work when they bring it out of the box. As for the negative commets I am receiving all I can say is that there are people visiting here who are thinking of buying a G1. Well. This is how the phone works and the people you will have to deal with. Buy a phone that already has what you want outherwise you will just be waiting for the G1 to do what you want...

I think it's a valid question.

I'm having the same problem in Ireland where apps like fring and iskoot (which *can* do proper voip) aren't available. The Irish telecom companies are blocking proper VOIP apps as well as the dial-out services like SkypeOut.

As far as I can tell iskoot would work in Ireland if only I'd installed it before coming here. However, you have to install it via Android Marketplace so the telecom companies can block this access. Currently I'm trying to find someone with a rooted phone who can install it and then copy the app and send it to me.

I don't quite get what the big fuss is about VOIP. It's brilliant. I have an asterisk server, I want to connect my phone to my Asterisk server over WiFi and either receive or make calls through that.

The argument from the service providers about lack of revenue is ludicrous, because most people will still either buy the phone or pay for the appropriate tariff and then use less service. The service providers will not lose.

VOIP can be utilised in the office too with a suitable SIP server in place, your device now becomes a roaming hand held device. Can be quite useful in business.

Now Im not quite sure in what is so "outlandish" about providing a sip client built into the phone that can communicate with your address book etc to make or receive calls over SIP.

The N95/N80 has had it for, oh, what, a few years now?
 
Asterisk is an open source VoIP PBX. This is not software that would run on the G1...it would be installed on a server that you own (or rent) with internet access. The asterisk PBX would then connect to your land based telephone system (or better yet, any of the VoIP providers out there of your choosing). For it to work on the G1, any open SIP based client would work. Though I haven't really looked all that hard, I don't believe any such application yet exists.
