Toggling Data

I have researched here for a way to easily enable/disable data on my phone. (I have the $15 plan and don't want to exceed the limit.)
I have found a few apps (widgets?) that claim to do this (e.g., JuiceDefender) and tried them. None work.
I am quite willing to entertain the possibiity I have no idea what I'm doing so I'll explain. According to posts here, I can disable Data manually by Settings>Data Manager>Data Delivery> and toggling Data Enabled. This seems to work.
I presume, when using a Data widget, "Data Enabled" should enable/disable as I toggle the widget. That is, if I toggle a widget to the 'off' position, Data Enabled should turn off. Doesn't happen. Regardless the widget I use, toggling it on/off doesn't change Data Enabled. Yet, each of these apps/widgets gets good reviews. Am I missing something?

There are tons of 3g on off widgets. Most phones already have them built in, just add it to your homescreen, turn on when you want to use data, turn off when you dont. No need to fumble through the settings to turn it off.

When you toggle data on/off from a widget, it doesn't turn off data from settings. It disables the radios in some other way. You know your data is off from looking at the top of your phone, it will have a checkmark instead of the lit up and down arrows.

Thanks for the replies.
If there is a on/off widget that came with my phone, I can't find it. Guidance please.

>>a checkmark instead of the lit up and down arrows.<<
checkmark? I know less than I thought I did. On my Atrix, as I understand it, there is a "H+" in the status bar that represents ATT data connection. When the connection is "live" there are up/down arrows under the "H+." When the connection is dead, there is nothing under the "H+." No 'checkmark' anywhere. If this is incorrect, let me know what I'm missing.
As for ATT data, my problem is, in parts of my house, the signal is weaker than others. Thus, I start out surfing on wifi, look up a few minutes later and find I'm on ATT network. To avoid bumping my data plan limit, I want to eliminate the possibility of using ATT unless I KNOW I'm using ATT. That's all I want - a widget (visible confirmation) ATT data is dead/unavailable/unable to revive without an action on my part.

If there is one, when you go to add a widget, go to Settings, and it should be in there. If not, there are plenty of widgets in the market, just do a search for "3g toggle" or "data toggle"

Every phone is different. With your phone, if data is on, you will see the H+ icon. When data is being used, there will be arrows. When data is completely off, you shouldn't see the H+ at all.

I have seen with my new Gingerbread ROM, that all Data Toggler Widgets i had (Extended Control, Data Toggle, APN Toggle etc) do not work anymore, and some even open the settings page so that i disable Data manually.
