I put a WAV file in /media/audio/ringtones but it doesn't appear to have added it to the list of tunes I can choose amongst. Am I missing a trick? Surely it doesn't have to be an MP3? Do I need to reboot to get it to find it? (Not that this is an issue - this OS is less stable than Windows Vista!)

OK - turns out the answer is you DO have to reboot before it populates the ringtone choosing dialog with the newly uploaded files.

You could also just add the music files to your phone, and get a free app called RingDroid, that allows you to cut certain parts of songs and make your own ringtones.
