Help Top half of the back of my phone rattles?

osly

Lurker
From another user:
I've had my Honor 7X for 2 weeks now, and everything is working great! But whenever I tap or knock lightly on the back of the device around the upper half, particularly near the fingerprint scanner and camera, I can hear something rattling inside. I don't think anything is loose because when I shake the device up/down, sideways, there's no rattling sound. It's only when I tap or knock on the back towards the top. My camera and fingerprint scanner work no problem. Should I be concerned or is this normal? Thanks!

So I have had my Honor 7x since Christmas, and it works great. I have the exact same "problem" but everything works as expected. I've had this phone since Christmas and have now just noticed it, I don't know when it started.
I have a hunch this has something to do with the cameras, or something inside the cameras?

Since Honor 7x does not have OIS or EIS, there is less of a chance the camera is producing the noise? I really need to know what the heck is happening with my device...

Here's a video taken on my Honor 7x with the "problem" https://drive.google.com/file/d/1wPSuzJvIe64-6vRK7sBYKE53U9DB13Ex/view?usp=sharing, it is me tapping the phone in the dark because it was like 1am in the morning, so don't go thinking dirty thoughts lol

I have also attached the file to this thread. I also have dropped my phone a few times, but my old Honor 5x suffered much more abuse than a few drops, and it had no such rattling around the camera area.

Should I be concerned or is this normal for the device? Any help is appreciated!

Other than the rattle, does everything work okay?

We've had other phones in the past with a "camera rattle" that was just an annoyance than anything being wrong. Of course they aren't supposed to do that -- it's not 'normal', and it could possibly be a problem in the future. You could try and get it replaced under warranty.

I don't think it is covered under warranty anymore lol, I unlocked the bootloader and have a custom ROM running on it, of course I can go back and relock the bootloader and reinstall EMUI, but I really don't feel like doing that. Apart from this "rattle annoyance" my phone works fine, I have encountered no issues in the camera app or in my phone's performance.
The video however, has a really loud rattle and I've been told that it's definitely not normal and to open up the phone to see what is inside that could be causing the problem.
Another reply I have received is to remove the sim card tray, which I will do soon.
Thanks for your quick response!

Taking out the sim tray is easy and you should certainly give that a go. Opening up the phone, OTHOH might be a problem. Here's a pretty good video of how it comes apart.

Look like something you might want to do to fix a rattle? If it only happens when you tap the screen, it might be a faulty (whatever they call that thing that provides haptic feedback). If it doesn't click or rattle when the phone is off, or you shake it, then I'd think it's probably that. Try turning it off - i think it's under accessibility settings.

There is no such option in the Accessibility settings lol
I'm just going to leave it as is and wait for more people to give me possibilities for why my phone is acting this way lol

Oh jeez, it might have been more helpful if I looked first. Sorry. It's under settings>sound>vibration and see if turning it off makes any difference.

Don't see a specific option for vibration but I disabled everything having to do with the vibration motor, and the problem was still there, so it's not software-based.
