Touch screen ridiculously sensitive?

Didn't find anything on this on any other forum so I decided to create one. My galaxy s3 screen seems to respond to my touch when I'm literally not touching the screen. My finger will be above the screen by a few millimeters or so and I can scroll up and down pages. Is this some kind of proximity sensor? It seems very specialized and possibly battery intensive. I think its very cool but I've been having problems with my battery lately so if this is causing it to drain I'd like to be able to disable it. Anyone else experience this or at least know what I'm talking about?
 
I have the same problem, braught it up but no one responded and im glad that im not alone with this finding. And i have not found any way to adjust the sensitivity as I could have with the BB. I would surely like to find a way to adjust the sensitivity.
 
That isn't possible. It's a capacitive screen, unless you touch it, it won't register any "touch". It more likely that you are touching the screen so lightly you don't realized it.
 
I've touched my screen without touching it as well. Better than the nexus 7 which takes a second to recognize touches.

The capacitive layer is underneath the glass, so you never actually "touch" it anyway so it is entirely possible that it can be affected without even touching the glass too.

I have no idea whether it's possible or not but I can see a gap between my thumb and the screen (looking at it parallel with the screen) and my thumb is definitely not touching the screen and the page is scrolling up and down. It's bizarre, but it's happening.

Do you think this would be causing any battery drain issues? Seems like it's ultra sensitive if you don't even need to be near ("near" considering how small the scale is) the screen for it to respond.

It's absolutely possible... with my GS3. I've had it happen, and I know, without a doubt, that I did not make physical contact.

I wouldn't think so, no. Capacitive screens have a charge. The idea is that when a finger disturbs that charge, the screen registers the disturbance as a command. All that's happening here is your finger is disturbing the charge sooner by not being as close, however nothing different is happening at the screen side of things.
 
never had this problem but I do have a screen protector fitted.

Ahh very interesting! Thanks for the helpful info! Was not aware that screens interact in that way.
 
Been having similar problems with the screen sensitivity issue. Still haven't found a way to change that. My battery seemed like it would be dead faster than it should as well. Then I noticed that it was turning on in my pocket. Putting it with the screen facing my leg, just walking around would do it. Turned it facing out and anytime I brushed my pocket it would turn on. Not sure if that's the case with you. I usually wear dress slacks so the fabric is thin. Just try to double up a t-shirt around your finger the phone will still sense it.
 
like SURoot pointed out the screen turns on from pressing the home button or the wake/sleep/power button.

when the screen is off i can tap the cocarocha on the screen and it wont turn on
 
I own a Samsung Galaxy S III too .. It is SUPER sensitive! I put a case on it and it's a tiny bit easier to not touch the sides of the screen so much .. I had screens flipping all over before .. Today I too noticed that you don't even have to TOUCH the screen for it to react .. Which stinks with texting as it's always double lettering and putting the wrong letters in my texts .. I looked for settings to calm it down .. Haven't found any :(
