My brother gave my mom his HTC hero and she currently is with boost mobile,Is there any way she can transfer her boost mobile number to sprint? Thanks

As long as the number on the boost carrier is still active, it can be transferred. Transferring is called porting your number. You must make sure the number is ported to the new carrier first. After service on Sprint is active, then cancel the boost account.

no need to cancel, when you port your number it automatically cancels with your current provider.
