Transferring Apps to New SD Card?

I just got a new SD card and was wondering if it did any harm if I just put it in my phone? Is there something I should do first? I know some apps write to the memory of the card so I didn't know if this did any damage?

By far and away the easiest way is to take out the SD card in your phone, put it in your PC with a card reader, copy everything from it to a folder on your desktop, put your new card in your PC and copy everything back to it.

Seems to work for me.
