Transferring contacts TO gmail

I've always saved my contacts on my phone but now want to save them to my gmail account. How do I do this without having to export/import them on my phone and have a double of everything?

I think that the best way to do this is :
*settings
*accounts & sync
*manage accounts
*check your gmail account
*tap SYNC contacts.

Did that work?

I never had this problem. When I add new contacts, I always add them to my one main Google account. But if that doesn't work, let us know and I will have another look.
