Transferring from HTC Desire to Samsung Galaxy S6?

Sorry if this is a stupid question, but no amount of online searching has yielded a workable answer.

I just upgraded to a Samsung Galaxy S6 and I'm trying to transfer contacts/music/etc from my old HTC Desire 610. I've tried using the Android file transfer programme but it says I have to connect both phones to my computer. Well, I can do that, but I only have the one SIM card and obviously it can only be in one phone at a time. What am I missing? :-(

You cannot put a sim into the S6 phone. You can't even pull the battery. So since you can't backup contact to your sim card and install to the S6, have you tried Google? My transfer went well, but only backed up contacts with Google. I used my computer to transfer photos but don't store music on my phone. Plug S6 into computer and double click the Samsung folder. Photos went into dcmi folder... Hope this helps.

I think you must mean SD card, which it doesn't have. It has a SIM (nano) - surely it wouldn't work without one. Anyway, after swapping the SIM back and forth and trying to install a couple of different switching apps on both phones, I sorted it all with AirDroid, which was how I used to manage the HTC in the first place. Thanks, though! :-)

Just out of interest - you say "surely it wouldn't work without a Sim card". I had my S6 before I had the sim card and was able to access the Internet by Wi-Fi and also copy all of my data across from my old Galaxy S4 to the S6 before inserting the sim
- Of course I could not make phone calls.

Are you using a Mac? Android File Transfer: http://www.android.com/filetransfer/
That's what I often use myself. It doesn't need a SIM in the phone to transfer data to and from the Macbook and Android devices, as it uses MTP via USB.

Wunay: I didn't try using the Samsung without the SIM. My HTC certainly wouldn't do much without it. I'd just get a "no SIM installed" message.

Thanks, Mikedt, but it's all done now. AirDroid was the saviour in the end. I just kept getting error messages and "can't access" messages when I tried other things, but it's quite possible I was doing something wrong. :-)

How did you swap sim cards with an old Desire? I had the Incredible S, which was newer, and that had the full size sim, I need needed that cut down to work with the Note Series and the S6 takes a nano card?

The HTC Desire took a nano card?
