Transparent backgrounds for shortcut icons possible?

B1llK

Newbie
I have a bunch of nice little .png icons (like my avatar) that I'd like to use as shortcut icons on my homescreen for things like contacts etc - however - when I try to use them I get a black square background on them.

The original .png file has a transparent background and I can't figure out how to keep it that way - or if it's even possible when utilizing them as icons for shortcuts on my homescreen.

Anyone have any ideas? Thanks.

You must have some .png files that were saved without the transperency option.... they should be able to be "fixed" with photoshop or similar software.

on second thought, i opened a copy on my pc in PS, and he has no background. what are using to change the icon?

I'm not changing the icon - I'm just dumping it in a folder on the root of my SD card and then applying it to a contact picture on my Droid X via editing the contact and browsing to the icon I want to use for their picture via Astro. Then I create a shortcut to that contact on my desktop and it appears - but with a square black background around it.

I know it's a pretty cludgy approach to get where I want but I'm not sure how else to do it. Never had an Android before the Droid X.

Thank you for the reply!

ok, i see.

that's a challenge... i'm trying to find a way to change that icon even if after the fact, on my evo. got nothing yet. i'll let you know if i come up with anything..

bringing all the big guns, PAID apps to bare! no luck yet (whimper)

I have the paid version of folder organizer, but I believe you could do this with the lite version also....

1 open folder organizer
2 touch "shortcuts" tab
3 create new shortcut\select Folder Organizer Item
4 click the little arrow saying icon
5 choose your icon...
6 then you do what you do on droid to create a shortcut on the home screen,
7 choose Folder Organizer Item,
8 choose Shortcut and the one you just created should be in your list....

that should do it.
