Trick stereo into thinking Android is IOS?

Currently I can plug my Iphone into my Pioneer AVH-P4100DVD's car USB port and listen to any audio app on the Iphone. (Spotify, gMusic, Ipod, ESPN radio.) As well as control it on the Iphone.

However, I want to get an Android phone that does the same thing. I have tried a few friends phones to no avail. (Droid 2, Nexus)

My suspicion is that when the headunit was made, Pioneer only coded it to handle IOS and not Android.

Any thoughts on getting it to work?
This is the only thing preventing me from getting an Android.

(Note: Using the "Mass Storage" option does not suit my needs)

Thanks

As an alternative, I put all of my music on a $5 thumbdrive and just leave it in my car all of the time. I just plug it into the headunit USB slot and I can display/play all the music on the thumbdrive. I have a sony head unit. Of course this does not help you with some of the radio or music streaming.

The usb thumb drive works well for what it is.
However, anything over 8gigs the head unit really struggles with and
then user navigation is slow and cumbersome.

I like being able to control my music on my phone.
Plus, I lose Spotify's all you can eat, any song in the world on demand, as well as, other streaming apps.

Again, "Mass storage" through a thumb drive or an android phone, doesn't suit my needs.

I want to pipe in streaming through high quality means.

If your stereo has an auxillary port or a 3.5mm jack, you can always use that.

Yea what he said.

The way that iPhones are made is their usb port acts as, usb, video out, auxiliary, basically everything that most android phones (at least newer ones) can do just through one port... So it's not so much the way the headunit was made, but rather the way that iPhones are made compared to any other phone.

I'm in the same boat here, considering moving from an iPhone 4 to a Samsung Galaxy S3 and this is my biggest worry. I have a Honda CRV 2010 model that has a USB port and AUX port. With my current iPhone I can plug it into the USB port and control the audio playback from various applications through the car stereo (I use Downcast to automatically download podcasts so use that instead of the built-in Music player, and also use Audible).

So I assume if I plug in an Android phone through the AUX port I'll be able to get any audio playing from any app through the car speakers, but what would happen if I get a phone call? Would it route to my Bluetooth headset instead and pause the audio playback? That's the most important feature for me, as I don't want to be fiddling with audio playback and phone calls while I'm driving so I'd highly appreciate any feedback on this.

I'll be borrowing a friend's Samsung Galaxy Note just to test this and other features out before buying a device of my own but unfortunately the ICS update hasn't been rolled out to his device yet so I'm not sure if this functionality is any different with ICS compared to Gingerbread.
