Tried to do a Shortcut - Backfired big time

My daughter's HTC One M9 bit the dirt, the digitizer went south, does what it wants to....

I have a spare Samsung S5, it was all setup like we want things, figured all I needed to do put her SIM card in my S5 and good to go.... well almost, the M9 uses a NanoChip SIM and the S5 uses a full size SIM chip.

oh well, a trip to Verizon Retail center took care of the SIM. no charge just like normal.

Now, I go home and figure that using Samsung's Smart Switch would be a neat way to move her stuff to my old S5. Well, that program does a tremendous job of moving things over.

However, what I found out is that it DOES NOT erase an old Contacts List...

All of my old contacts, and all of her contacts lists merged together. Talk about a mess............

I was irritated enough, that I almost FDR'd the phone and started all over from scratch again.

but, she had put in a full day massaging that S5 so it is hers.... I think if that I did the FDR, that I would get horse whipped.

So, a little message for all who think that a simple shortcut will get the job done...

uh, no, it don't. It makes a mess.

My lesson to this 73 year old dog, I just learned a valuable lesson. If you are going to assign that phone to a new number, make damn sure to perform the FDR first....

Well,

an update on this.

The phones were all sync'd to my Google Account, and I was unaware that a phone that is sync'd to your account, stays sync'd to that account until you remove it from your account.
I had to log into my Google Account from my PC web browser and REMOVE the device named S5.


At this time, I have NO IDEA if the FDR would have taken care of that for me? But, I am thinking that "no it won't", because it had to be syncing to the IMEI, not the phone number.

the phone has a new SIM in it, and a new phone number, yet it was still syncing to my personal Google Account.

so, be mindful all, if you have a Google Account, and you are using Android Devices that are sync'd to that Account, be wary of what you do before you turn loose of that phone. You can loose a lot of data privacy if you don't.

for me, I was lucky to learn this with my own daughter's phone, as we both live in the same home.
So, I will just pick up her phone in the morning when she gets home from work. then I will make sure that it is not sync'd to anything.

a bit of humor in all of this.
I am a quirky one, and I changed the "Battery Full" message in MacroDroid to say:
"Help me, I am feeling Bloated... please unplug the charger"

My daughter got a laugh out of it, for a one time event....
but, she asked me to take it off.

another little tidbit....

it seems that there is no way to re-associate the cellphone to a different Google Account.
When you go to Google screen, and hit the 3 line menu icon, it comes up with my old email address...

I have tried to get it to use a different gmail account, but it is refusing to do so....
anyone know how to get around this?

My daughter does not want anything to do with Google, she does not want them in her life, so she just "signed out" of my Google Account.... therefore, it is now asking for the password to sign back in.

She wants it to stay that way, "Good Riddance" she said.... "I hate Google and its' intrusion on people's lives...
it will never know anything about me!"

and so, the phone works on her phone number, and that is all she wants.....

I seem to remember eons ago, having forgotten the password to my original gmail account.... the phone would not even let me skip that part and go on.... this was years ago with the old Galaxy S Fascinate.... before the Feds sued Google for being a strangle hold on our Android phones.....
I think they still have the phones tied to a specific account, or they won't let them work....

anyone know anything about that???

so, for now, the phone is working, and that is good enough for her...

Go to Settings > Accounts & Sync.

At the bottom you should see an "Add Account" button.

will try that in a bit, she is in town at the moment.
but last night, she told me that she does not want it associated with Google in any way.

the problem I see with "adding an account" is it does not state that will remove the old account, ie, mine.

nothing lost by trying though, when she gets home, I will try this, and if it don't work, then it will be FDR'd and use Smart Switch to pull her stuff off the old HTC

that seemed to do the job, she is happy, and that makes me happy.

she went right to her Kindle ebook reader, and I tested Play Store, so the phone is hers now.
