Trouble getting chromecast audio to cast music from tablet

Brutie

Lurker
Hi,

I have a Hudl 2 running Android 5.1 and a regular TV chromecast which works great for watching stuff on my TV.

I just installed a new chromecast audio device with the intention of casting music from the hudl to my stereo . I don't want to use google play or spotify to stream music from the cloud. I just want to play from files on the hudl.

I have tried two apps - Local Cast and also Rocket Player - ,but neither can successfully cast the files. The issue is that the apps try to play a music file but can only play a half a second or so then skips to another track and another ......I did manage to play a few tracks on google play but now it won't play any more and is bugging me to upload my music collection online which I don't want to do.

I feel sure there must be some setting somewhere which is preventing the apps from reading the files properly (BTW these are MP3 and WAV and are on an SD card in the hudl)

There is a note on google chromecast troubleshooting page about setting the microphone to be active when casting but on my tablet there is no option to do this.

This is driving me nuts....can anyone help me . This cannot be rocket science surely ???

Many thanks for any suggestions

Regards, Brutie

You mentioned you also have a Chromecast that's working fine, but have you tried using the Google Home app to cast local content, such as a video, from your Hudl to your TV through your Chromecast? Just trying to determine if there's an issue relative to your Hudl being able to cast local content to your TV. If that doesn't work out, that might be a related issue as to why your Hudl cannot cast local audio content via the Chromecast Audio.
You also listed a couple of third-party apps that haven't worked out so far but what results did you have using the recommended Google Home app?

There's also a question if your Chromecast Audio is functioning OK. You stated you don't plan on streaming content from online sources (i.e. Spotify) but have you at least tried listening to anything off the Internet just to confirm your Chromecast Audio is working? If playing online content does not work, that could mean a hardware issue with the device itself. Not likely but probably more like an issue where you need to re-pair up your Chromecast Audio to your home network. But that's also not likely as you did state those apps can almost start playing but then fail and move on the next file, and then on and on.The gist of the matter being those apps on your Hudl are indeed detecting your Chromecast Audio over your home network, it's just that they fail when streaming any content.

Which also leads to another possible trouble point, your home network. If for instance you have a really dated router it could just be a matter of network capacity where streaming content that's of higher resolution and/or bitrate is hampered by general throughput. Even if you do have a newer, more robust router there could be other issues, one example being your Chromecast works fine as it's well within the coverage range of your router but if your Chromecast Audio is located elsewhere and it's just on the fringe of that same coverage, that will affect how well data gets transferred. But again that's just an example. It could be a matter of range and either a 2.4GHz or a 5GHz network, or if you're in a congested area, network interference/noise floor issues from nearby neighbors.

So yes, it's not 'rocket science' as you stated, but it might be a lot more complicated than you're allowing for. If you provide more details on your set up, someone might be able to provide more relevant suggestions. (Wouldn't be nice if another Hudl2 owner replies with a simple 'just enable this option in your Settings' answer?)
