True protective case

Anyone using a true hard shell protective case? I use Strava and Endomondo to track my mountain bike rides, but would like to have to phone closer than in my padded backpack. To do this, I would want a hard shell case affixed to my bacpack strap. I see a lot of talk about Otterbox, but need a real review for the Razr Maxx.
 
I've never actually owned one, but have friends who do, even on I phone it has protected it from some nasty falls, and I've read stories about the same for the razr/maxx. I prefer to go naked with my phone but if I were doing something active like you are I would want a case
 
I own two smartphones and both wear Otterbox Defender cases. I've dropped them several times and the phones are protected from dings, scratches, and 3-4 foot drops on pavement. It is heavy especially when using the belt clip.
