True VOIP app??

I got a mytouch 3g figuring it would handle voip like iphone and wm phones. But to my dismay, it appears there are no true VOIP apps for android that will allow me to call over wifi/3G from Germany.

I have read about sipdroid, truphone, skype lite, iscoot and others, but they all make a local call first, even to members of the same service -totally defeats the purpose. You'd be better off using a calling card!!

Anyway, just wondering if I am missing something. I got an android phone because I wanted to be part of something different, with great potential. I just didn't realize that it would be different in such a disadvantageous way...

I use the Fring which works fine with the wifi connection on my Skype Out account. My carrier block VOIP on their 3G network.

How can carrier's block VOIP over 3G? I mean, I always thought data was data. The only way they could block would be to know you are running a VOIP app, right?

I'll look into Fring again.

They could block certain ports that they know are used for VOIP.

agreed - fring works with skype to skype contacts over wifi. Truphone works as well but is less intuitive - once you have set up your skype account in truphone you have to go into im each time, connect skype and when your contacts appear long-press one to get the option of calling them over skype

You might want to look at "Skuku", which I use. It's not only for outgoing VOIP calls but also allows you to receive incoming calls and texts to your regular SIM card's phone number over wi-fi. The catch is that not all countries are supported, but their website says German SIM cards are covered. Search it on the Market or check their website.
