trying file recovery and stumped...

my phone went a bit nuts (wouldn't even boot) factory reset sorted everything out!

but file loss ofc, which I thought I could deal with post format, I have had several droid phones in the past and have been able to easily recover lost files...

BUT seems the recent android they have purposely got out of the way to make this process more complicated by removing mass storage, having some experience with ubuntu helped.

long short dumped the devices entire internal ram/ssd to a usb flash drive, but here is the problem, scanning it with several different file restoration tools found nothing from the camera!

makes no sense the files should just be in there? unless factory reset is zero filling the storage ? or maybe the files are stored on some kind of obscured filesystem format as they seem to be on an emulated filesystem.

its not the end of the world if these files are unrecoverable it would just have been nice to get them back, but I am more genuinely interested if anyone can enlighten me about the emulated storage and if factory reset does more than just delete files ?

ps:next time Im setting up my camera to save files to the external sd card! also %&^$ the cloud! ;)

Thanks

phone was in a state where it wouldn't even boot so my only (and last resort?) was todo a factory reset but yeah backup app seems like a good plan for 'next time ;)

Still interested if anyone knows if newer versions of android goes out of its way to permanantly destroy user data during factory resets ? I mainly want to know because I have recovered tens of old phones and usb drives in the past and never had the methods I use not be able to recover a single file.

anyway thanks, just put that down to a loss/mistake I will not make again

thanks

How did you get the filesystem dump? If the phone only supports MTP, maybe you did not get a true raw dump of the contents?

I'd guess the simplest way for a factory reset to perform the wipe would be if it formats the partitions. I know custom recoveries I've used do that, but have never done a reset using a stock recovery (I tend not to leave a stock recovery on for very long ;)).
