Trying to Figure Out Why QuickPic Isn't Stable Anymore...

Okay, so here's the sitch... I banged up my phone yesterday evening while at work. I had been running the Moto G4 (not the Plus), on Marshmallow, with Nova Launcher Prime and had been using a copy of QuickPic passed along to me (the last version before Cheetah Mobile bought them out). All was good and very stable. But then my G4 met the side of a granite table gouging the phone and damaging the power button so that it became stuck and started an endless loop (had to dig it out with a pair of tweezers to get it to stop).

Because I had purchased a protection plan when I had originally purchased it, I took it back to the store and after a bit they gave me the G5. Apparently Moto isn't making the G4 in the thirty-two gigabyte capacity so after fruitlessly searching their inventory and the inventory of other stores, rather than downgrade me to sixteen gigabyte they just upgraded me to the G5 (yeah me!)... Got home, got to rebuilding my device and all is well with the exception of QuickPic. I installed the copy that had been passed to me, I saved it on my SD card, and it runs well, doing all the things that QuickPic is supposed to do. However when you leave QuickPic is pops up saying that QuickPic has stopped and sometimes it just quits all together. I've tried to download and install the version on the Play Store now branded with Cheetah Mobile and it does the same thing. I ALSO have a copy of the apk on my laptop and thought maybe perhaps the program had become corrupted (it was a nasty fall my G4 took), so I copied over the apk, installed it, it runs and then it has the same issue...

QuickPic runs. It does all that it's supposed to do. It's just a annoyance that this is happening. I'm not above using another gallery app (so speak up if you care to, but it must be able to also hide photos), I'm sure there are several good ones out there and I don't HAVE to use QuickPic. It's just that I've used it for years and so I know it well is all. Advice?

Has anyone tried this version of QuickPic? I've been digging around the net while awaiting a response to my question here. I found the included apk of QuickPic but I don't know anything about delving into them, so I don't know if it's signed or unsigned or otherwise contains anything - even though both Sophos on my PC and McAfee on my G5 both say that it's okay. But it might prove interesting to anyone else who's having the problem of suddenly crashing and generally being unstable on Nougat... Opinions?

Sometimes it is the most obvious thing that is what is most often overlooked. The icon on the Nova launcher screen was the issue. I just deleted it an added a new one.

I noticed that when I went to the play store and open the program from there it was working perfect.

I don't even want to tell you what I went through trying to figure this out. Clearing caches/ data. Even ditching Nova Launcher and using native Samsung experience. Geesh...

The old version (pre CM) of QuickPic still works fine on my Pixel 2 (Android 9, April security patch). So it's not that it's become incompatible with newer versions of Android itself. I'd put it down to just lack of support (manufacturers' frameworks changing and the app not being updated) but for the CM version doing the same (TBH I'd not even have installed the CM version to test, certainly not without turning off all internet connections until I'd finished testing and deleted it).

Never really found an alternative I was equally happy with, which is why I still have the old QuickPic. I do mostly use Google Photos these days (which is a bit meh as an app but does backups where I want these), I've had F-Stop installed for a couple of years but tend to forget I have it, am currently evaluating Simple Gallery. I've also played with Piktures, but again find I don't use it. When I've time I'll do a proper comparison and rationalise my collection of gallery apps (it's not like Calendar apps, where each has something it does better, I really don't need more than 2-3 of these things).

I haven't found anything better than QuickPic pre-CM and I've tried many, many gallery apps. Just stick with Google Photos until another developer who doesn't care about money and just wants to share comes out.
