Trying to ping Samsung Galaxy Tablet

Hi, I recently acquired a Galaxy tab. I am connecting to my personal wifi no problem, can accept and send emails etc. I am trying to sync PalmDesktop data to DajaOffice via wifi. There does not appear to be anything stoping this (No VPN) but my laptop cannot connect to the Android tablet. I have tried to ping the device but it just gives a 'Request timed out' message. Any suggestions please
