Help Trying to use my phone in China

I had my G1 unlocked so that I could use it with an international sim card while I am traveling over seas, but I am having the hardest time making it work. The phone accepted the sim, but will not search for a network. I was told that I could manually search for a network by tapping the antenna icon, but I don't know where that is on my screen.

Please help. It is really hard to get around China with no cell phone to call someone if I get lost.
