Turn off the avatars!

I find the avatar pictures distracting. On the old site there was a way to turn them off. Is it possible to turn them off?

Please, the new site is hurting my eyes (OK, not literally). But the visual clutter from peoples avatars has literally got me thinking about unsubscribing.

Likewise signatures (I can't remember if you retained the option to turn signatures off or not).
