Help Turned off and on mobile data, can't browse internet with mobile data anymore

I just had a hell of a time configuring my phone to use mobile data.
It was all working fine, but then I decided to turn off mobile data (I'm on PAYG, this is what I've done in the past with my old phone)

Later, I double checked that it was still working and quickly found out it was not!
I tried re-enabling mobile data and turning off wi-fi, but instead of showing H+ next to the bars like before it showed a G, and any attempt of web browsing is met with an error (this webpage is not available). No matter what I do (airplane mode, reboot, changing access points) it won't work.

So I tried everything, but the only thing that worked was to reset the default APN, texted giff gaff (my network) for the APN settings, re-installed them, and then it works...

Unfortunately the 3G signal where I live is pretty weak, so when mobile data is turned off it'll eventually fluctuate to 0 bars so reverts back to no nonsense GSM (ie. no H+, sometimes a disabled G sign or just the bars)
Turning back on mobile data will show the dreaded G next to the signal bars. It'll never attempt H+ again.

I should note I'm with a uk provider called giffgaff.
And in my preferred network type drop down, all I have is "4G (recommended)" and "3G", nothing else, which strikes me as a little odd.

Until I find a solution I won't be using mobile data. It's too much hassle to get it working when I need to turn it off so often.

This has to be a bug, right? As soon as I switch on mobile data it should try a weak (ish) 3G signal before reverting to cruddy old 2G, which appears to not have any use whatsoever.

This might work.. try making a new APN with the same settings as your current APN, but the APN Protocol is changed to IPv6.

Sounds a lot like the MetroPCS carrier problem decribed in these threads..

Another problem may be that the new 4G network isn't LTE? I don't see anything about LTE on the 4G website.. http://giffgaff.com/4g

Also do you have the 4G sim?

Edit: You do have LTE! Very cool, but looks like very limited coverage right now.

I hope the IPv6 trick works for you.. even if just H+ and not LTE.

I never mentioned 4g. I bought this model over the older one not for 4g but the SD card slot.

I'll try the IP v6 thing but is that still with getting 4g working?

Basically, I have a the right settings, it works fine on H+, but as soon as it loses 3g signal / I turn off mobile data / phone goes to sleep, it'll go back to the most basic signal (just bars)
Then in order to tell the phone to get a 3g signal I need to reset and setup the apns again.

Also, the preferred network type is nondescript/limited. Where's the auto option for 2g/3g?

I brought up 4G because it is a 4G phone and was thinking it might be part of the problem. So do you have the preferred network set to 3G? I hope the IPv6 works for you. It solved a 4G problem, but maybe same type of problem with 3G.

Also you may still need the 4G sim, even if you're not using 4G.
