Turning Screen Off In Google Navigation....?

I am sure I pressed something once that caused the screen to go off so I could drive simply by the voice commands.

Anyone know how to do it please as currently the screen does not time out (which is fine normally) but if I dont need to look at the map and just want the voice then it is a waste of battery life.
