txt contact number receives with area code after 2.1 upgrade

Since I upgraded to 2.1 all my txt messages come in with an area code, (w/o the 1). Very frustrating as I can't keep a thread going, my messages are from my people contacts and the responses are from a different number. Any ideas on how to correct this?
