Unable to Connect to Laptop/Desktop

I am unable to get my new Lenovo Ideatab A1000 to connect via USB to either my office desktop computer (XP, and networked) or laptop (Windows 8). I get USB routines that run on the desktop/laptop, and I get on the Android a screen that says "USB connected" but I cannot see the Android Device on "My Computer" (XP) or "Computer" (Windows 8). How can I operatively connect to copy files to/from the Android?

Could be a driver issue (remove USB cable, uninstall the drivers from the PC, reconnect USB cable, allow all drivers to install) or just as likely, a dodgy USB cable (use a different cable - they're around
