You don't mention the phone you have or the android version, but since you're using the photos app, I'll work it from that angle.
I'll assume you are searching in Chrome on the images tab. Let me walk you through what I just did and maybe you can let us know if you are doing anything differently.
I opened chrome, in the search box, I typed "antelope" and then tapped on the images tab. When I found an image that I wanted to download, I tapped on that and then long-pressed the main image until i saw the option to download. When i saw the download complete message, I closed chrome and opened photos. From there I tapped on the menu (three bars, upper left) and selected "device folders". You should see your recently downloaded image there.
Now, a few things ... Photos, does not, by default, show device folders other than the camera. You have to add those locations manually. And the default download folder for Android is "Download" but for some strange reason, Chrome puts them in a folder called "Downloaded". You might also see another folder called "Downloads" which would be from other apps that can download things.
But, there's good news. If you open Chrome, click on menu (three dots, upper right) and go to settings. All the way at the bottom (actually second to the bottom) is an option for downloads. There you can set the default folder where downloads are saved.
