Unable to send emojis since upgrade to marshmallow

I have a Galaxy S5 that just updated to marshmallow about one week ago. Since I got the upgrade, I can't send emojis using the Messages app. Every time I try to send one, the message app shuts down and I get the following message:
Unfortunately, Messages has stopped

All other functions of the phone are working.
Any ideas?

Try wiping the Message app's cache as per #1.5 of S5 Lollipop Update Problems - Dummies Guide to see if that helps. You ould also try wiping the phone's cache partition, as per #1.3, always a good idea after an update.

As I stated above, my phone is now using marshmallow, not lollipop. Will those suggestions still work?
More importantly, is there any risk of my losing the texts that are on my phone? I want to keep most of them.

Use SMS Backup and Restore as per #2.1 of the guide mentioned above, to be on the safe side if your texts are important to you.
