Understanding SIP, Skype, VOIP, etc.

This is a complex question. I'm trying to understand all the voice and videocalling options and this standard called SIP.

It looks like the SIP standard combines all kinds of calls (voice with different quality and number of callers i.e. conference calls with or without video) on any device that implements SIP. So a "handset" also includes a computer/webcam and program/SIP client, an android with a SIP client, or a new "phone" like MaBell used to sell that plugs into the wall.

What I would like is a "phone number" (or SIP id or whatever) that can ring my mobile phone or computer, with or without video. And likewise for initiating calls. It looks like this technology is coming together.

I might ask, where's a place to look for the how-to info? Or good links to understand this better?

I gather Skype is a proprietary VOIP and not integrated with other technologies?
