"Unlimited Data" 5gb Cap

Yeah, apparently it isn't a new topic, but just out of curiosity, how many users on here get close to, or max out, the 5gb monthly data allowance? I am getting close to doing so, with nearly 1.25gb per week being used. Very sneaky, so much for true unlimited. It's a shame for an extra 10 or 15 dollars a month, they just offer true unlimited data plans. I have service via T-Mobile, and a customer service rep said that if I were to go over the 5gb allowance, I would not incur additional charges, nor would my data feature get shut off. Rather, the data speeds would drop to 2G, instead of 4G, until my next billing cycle begins, talk about slow. I'm aware all other companies are doing the same thing. Store reps make it seem like it's impossible to go over the allowance, yet I almost do every month, and fear when I begin to do so (mind you I don't even tether either). I would love to hear other peoples comments on this issue, I surely doubt I am the only one in situation.

My monthly utilization would be higher if I didn't set up my WiFi to automatically connect whenever I'm near a known access point that I've got login credentials.

WiFi tends to work faster than 3G so this is a win-win for me...

Errr no, i get 3GB from tmobile

He said the legal definition, not what companies actually use as their fair use.

Off the top of my head O2 and Virgin usually offer 500mb as 'unlimited' and 3UK is 1GB in the UK.

I'm on 3UK myself and generally get up to around 700MB-1GB. I'm on a new billing period tomorrow and have used over 970MB at the moment.

I have gone over once before and absolutely nothing happened other than them sending me a text message every day telling me I'd gone over until the new billing period started.

On my iPhone I really was only burning about 2GB per month and that was a heavy usage month for me. I did tend to leave WiFi on all the time so much of my data use was augmented via frequent WiFi connectivity.

On my Fascinate, however, I don't tend to leave WiFi on as often as battery conservation is a bigger deal to me. My Verizon wireless bill as of right now shows I've used 4 gigs' worth of data in the past 3 weeks. I hope that's just "new phone trend" at play.

I have the "unlimited" 5 GB plan here in the states, but can someone tell me how can I monitor my data usage? Thanks!

Who is your provider? most of them have a free text (or some similar service) you can send that shows your minutes, texts, and data usage for the month. Logging onto your account online will also probably show the information. Data takes up to 24 hours to refresh, but you will have a decent understanding by mid month I think.

netcounter on the marketplace works well or if you have tmobile you can user their my account app that now shows how much data you've used but otherwise id use netcounter. not only does it track wifi usage as well but you can export the data to be viewed in excel.

i go over 15 gigs a month lol.

3G in my neighborhood is really crappy. At best on peak days i get around 600 kbps tops. Earlier today when i was getting a free shake i did a speedtest on my vibrant and got about 4.7 mbits down and 1.6 up at best. There's just too damn many trees around here and it might be because it was Sunday and might not of been too many using tmo net here.

I've been trying to get close to the 2gb limit on AT&T but I have yet to get even close to beating my goal. I might do it this month. At 820mb as of now. But now that I have 2.2 on my phone I can watch flash videos which should help me reach my goal of screwing AT&T (even tho I'm really not).

i used 5gb this weekend :)
never had an issue going over on vzw
i think the most i used on my winmo was 14gb one month

depends on carrier.

I have Sprint, and you can view it under your account.

i have gone thru 1.8 gbs, is 2 weeks so far.

I never usually go over 2 or 3GB a month. Only 698MB this month and I had to reinstall all my apps once.

im on tmo also and i never come close the 5gb a month. i also set up wifi...but i never close. if i see im not close i will tether my xbox just so i can hit the 5gb and get my moneys worth. knowing it resets in the next few days

I have a 5GB data plan but I don't ever go over 2GB and that is forcing myself to watch youtube daily, lol. If I don't...my data is around 800mb a month. And no WIFI usage.

Rogers (carrier) charges through the roof for data, I got mine on a promotional deal 5GB for $30, usually it's close to $60 for 5GB and for $25, you get 500mb...so you understand why I got the deal when they were offering it, lol.

Extrapolating how much I've used so far this billing cycle, I'll have used a little over 300 MB. Whenever I'm at home I'm on my WiFi, and I guess I just don't use that much data otherwise... Even if I did use much more though, I much prefer T-Mobile's version of a data cap. Not only is it higher than other caps but I like that it only throttles you instead of cutting you off altogether or just charging you an arm and a leg for every Meg past the cap.
