I bought a tmobile phone and can I unlock it myself? If I can, how?

Can you please be more specific?  Are you wanting to unlock the bootloader? Wanting to root?  Wanting to install a custom recovery?  These can be done but steps are a bit different for each and there is risk of data loss involved.
