It depends on whether you are referring to unlocking the lock screen or unlocking the phone from your carrier. If it's the former, you should be able to just swipe a finger across the screen to unlock. That is, you set a password or PIN... but if that were the case, you as the owner of the device would already know the answer. For carrier unlocking, you' will need to purchase an unlock code from one ofd the many online sources (even eBay). In all cases, you will need to provide your phone make/model plus IMEI code. The IMEI may be obtained in two ways.
If you have a removeable battery, it will be on a label beneath the battery (visible once you remove the battery).
If your carrier hasn't disabled it, you should be able to dial *#06# on your phone dial pad to obtain it.
