Help Unlocking Droid X2

I have a Motorola Droid X2 that is no longer used (cancelled Verizon)
I want to give it to my grandson to record and take pictures.

The screen says 'welcome to Droid X2' and wants me to enter phone #. I tried, but this phone is not associated with a number any longer.

How do I 'unlock' so he can use my old phone's features (everything except making calls) ?

If the contract is out, cancelled and expired, might be best to contact Verizon for an unlock code. What happens if you try entering its former Verizon number?
