Unlocking G1

I got a G1 about 2 months ago and I need help unlocking it over to AT&T. I bought it from some guy on Craigslist so when I got home, I called T-Mobile to see if they could send an unlock code. While I waited, I just went ahead and bought off some site...unlocking.com or something...so now I have the code. Only problem is that the phone says that it cannot be unlocked. Now I am trying to unlock it for AT&T for my dad although its a surprise and he's not in town so I need to unlock it WITHOUT his SIM card so that it can be ready when he comes back.

Is there any way to do this? I have an old Boost Mobile SIM card lying around.

When I did try to unlock it with a friend's AT&T SIM card, it said something about "service unavailable" or something too. I searched online and found to get an app called "SGS Unlock" or something like that and it will provide an unlock code and such...when I boot on the phone, it stays on the "Insert SIM card" screen and cannot go to the regular Android OS screen. It does ask if I would like to add a Gmail account which I tried doing but it keeps saying that the network is unavailable. And of course I can make emergency calls.

Any help out there??

It could be the sim card get a new card then stick it in then it will ask for unlock code thats when u enter it

I've tried 3 different SIM cards. One was a Boost Mobile SIM (iDEN network), an unregistered AT&T SIM card, and a registered AT&T SIM card.

I looked up the problem and a few other people said that they downloaded an app called "SGS Unlock" or something like that that would give an unlock code...the problem is that I do not have a T-Mobile SIM card nor can I pass the "Insert SIM card" screen. If I could do that, I think that I could use wifi to download the app.

Is there any way to bypass the insert SIM screen? And if I was able to do that, would it allow me to use wifi without a SIM registered in it?

THANK YOU for responding lol this is my second thread here and like hundredth on the web asking for help.
