Help Unlocking phone whilst abroad

I currently have an X10i on UK Vodafone but am now living and working in New Zealand. The phone is currently registered to Vodafone NZ and works fine.

I am trying to unlock my X10i phone and have an unlock code however I also have a NZ Telecom SIM (my works phone) which I am trying to use in my UK X10.

I know that when I insert another nonregistered SIM that I should get a message asking for Unlock SIM code (I have the code) but nothing appears on my phone with the NZ SIM. I do not have a UK O2, orange etc SIM to try and being abroad cannot just pop back to UK. Even if I did have another type of UK SIM would it work here?

Can anyone advise if the NZ Telecom SIM will allow me to unlock my UK Vodafone phone or how I can get round it so that I can use the smart phone for work instead of the crap thing I have got as a company mobile? I do not plan to return to UK for a while so any help appreciated.

Thanks in advance

Billy

It does not sound like your phone is locked to the network. Though your are using the same network (in name) in NZ the phone should still pick it up as a different network and request a network unlocking code. However I believe I know your problem, in New Zealand Telecom run only on the HSDPA 850 signal type. This means you would need to use an "a" variant of one of our phones to get reception and if your handset came from Vodafone UK it will be the "i" variant. With this being the case you are not likely to get connection to Telecom with this phone in New Zealand and you would be better off using either Vodafone or 2degrees.

Thanks - this is exactly the issue but even so I still cannot unlock the damn thing.

Have just got a replacement phone and this will come unlocked and have confirmed it is on the 850 3G network so should, fingers crossed work. Will let you know!
